Summer Foraging

Meadowsweet and fireweed, sorrel and yarrow, giant polypore and ripe berries and fruit all beckon in August.
See what edible wild herbs, mushrooms, and flowers grow in woods and grasslands and hedgerows in summer. Come along for a wander, bring a basket and scissors, and we'll collect some edibles and learn about which wild foods to find and how to prepare them this time of year. We will have wild food and drink samples to finish the course.

Topics will include identification characteristics, sustainable foraging methods, culinary preparation tips, and awareness of toxic and inedible counterparts. This course is designed for participants of all ages and experience levels and features samples of wild food and beverages.

During our foraging walk at Almondell Country Park, we’ll harvest the beautiful wild autumn bounty. We’ll walk through the mixed woodlands and along the river meadows, and discover which plants and mushrooms we can find. We’ll discuss identification features, responsible foraging practices, preparation suggestions, and, of course, similar looking toxic and inedible species. Suitable for all ages and skill levels and will include a picnic to sample food and beverages brimming with foraged flavours.

We will take a gentle walk through August woods and meadows, look at the edible and toxic wild plants and fungi that are emerging this time of year, discuss foraging laws, ethics, and safety, and taste the wild flavours we encounter in a minimum of fifteen delicious and surprising food and drink samples.

Let's spend a late summer morning at the coast! Bring scissors and we'll make use of the low tide to harvest some delicious and healthy seaweeds. Afterwards, we'll look at some coastal greens and fungi, forage some seabuckthorn, gather around a fire (weather permitting) and sample some of those foraged flavours in a wild food lunch.
